A Challenge

This morning I woke up like I do every Sunday morning, thought about how it was way too early to get up, and got ready for work (like I do every Sunday morning).  Before I got in the shower, I hopped on the scale.  Like I do every Sunday.  Let’s just say ..  the number I saw looking back at me did not indicate that I had been participating in Boot Camp AT ALL.  Frustrating.

So I started to think.  I SAY I want to make changes and lose the last 10 pounds that I have been working on for quite some time.  I can’t tell you the number of times I have had conversations (mainly with myself and my husband) about how miserable I am in my own skin and I want to do something about it.  But, I don’t.

Bootcamp was a step in the right direction.  I’m not losing weight, but I am seeing changes in my body – and I feel stronger, and have more confidence.  But, I am 4 weeks into the 8 week bootcamp, and I want to see the changes I am making.  I am not comfortable being comfortable where I am.  So, while standing in the shower contemplating life, I decided this was THE TIME to do something about it.

Then, I saw Biz’s post, as well as Brittany’s.  So many of us struggle with the same things!  For me, it is not the workouts.  I have kicked up my workouts 100%, and I LIKE feeling strong and fit.  For me, it is the food.  So, I decided to start tracking every morsel that enters my mouth for the month of April.  I have lost a lot of weight.  And surprise surprise, both times when I lost large amounts of weight, it was the tracking of food that really motivated me, and kept me on track.  It might not work for everyone, but it works for me!  So I am going to stick with what I know works!

So – I am day 1 in – and success!  I stayed on track today with my goals for the month of April which are:

  • 1500 calories a day – and track all food
  • Keep up with my workouts and 10K training
  • Run a 5K!  (I registered for one on 4/14! )
  • Make a plan for workouts after bootcamp ends
  • Make an effort to communicate with family members that stress me out

I had a good day today!  Since I planned this personal challenge when I was already at work, I had to work with the food I had brought, but it worked out well!  I do eat healthy foods, just too much of them.  I just had to scale back a little.

Dinner – and playing with my new camera lens!

Honey dijon salmon, steamed broccoli, and fingerling potatoes!  And I am feeling good!

So that is where I am at!  Wish me luck!

  1. I have never had a lot of weight to lose, but I can relate to the feeling—and taking responsibility for it at some point to just jump in and take charge of the outcome. It intrigues me how that process happens! Actually, it’s pretty much what I studied for my dissertation—what makes women choose to follow through with health habits over time.

There’s actually no real answer. ha.

But intention, identifying why it’s important, and what you’ll get out of achieving your outcomes seem to be major players!

I track my food sometimes when I feel off track—it’s like hitting the reset button!

  2. Funny you should write this,Jane! I was thinking the same thing. I finally decided to get serious about losing weight this year. In January, I meticulously wrote down every calorie and lost 10 pounds. The next month I slacked off and only lost five. And in March, although I thought I was doing pretty good keeping a mental tally, I didn’t lose a single pound. I guess it’s just to easy to not count that little taste of this and nibble of that when you don’t physically see the calorie tally. So I decided that for April, I’d go back to logging every calorie. Good luck with your challenge!

    • Thank you! And same to you! I know what you mean about all little bites and nibbles … that is something I am terrible with, especially when packing lunches. That is another mini goal of mine!

  4. Oh the ultimate struggle. Like you, I have taken on a challenge to be more aware of what I am eating and to do my Yoga practice everyday. This, I am sure will help me tremendously.
