Well, technically, isn’t all compost relatively free? Considering we make compost out of what other people would just throw away, I think it counts as being free!
However, I am talking about something different. In our county, the sanitation department gives out free compost! We have been using this for a couple of years, and LOVE the stuff! I believe they take wood chips and mix it with compost. We use it as a mulch on top of everything we plant!
All you have to do is come pick it up!
Obviously, they know what they are doing, because these are their flowers! Aren’t they gorgeous?
Filling up the truck …
While my husband was supervising, I chatted with this little guy!
There is an animal shelter next door, so I think he might have been looking for a forever home. So tempting, he was cute and friendly!
I know you are jealous of our ride! This truck is older than I am! Love it!
Don’t laugh – but I love the smell of this stuff. It smells earthy – not at all like compost. My husband and I agree – it smells of victory!
We put it around all the plants – since our days get so hot because of the altitude, we are hoping it helps protect the plants, and keep in some of the moisture.
I love love love love love my sunflower!!
We put it all around the walkway garden – hope things start growing!
So check around your town and see if your sanitation district does anything like this! We have been getting this compost for 3 years .. all we have to do is show up with our truck, and they load us up! We try to get a load before winter sets in to last us through the cold months for the indoor plants. When I am planting, I almost feel like I am leaving my plants naked without it!

Oh my gosh, it is SO COOL that your town/city does this! I mean, mulch is expensive as heck, so to get free stuff that is also environmentally friendly? Fabulous! I really need to at least start composting my own veggie waste, but I somehow keep getting lazy/finding excuses. No good!

I know! So I’m kind of a lazy composter — I just collect kitchen scraps, and we have an area outside I dump them in, but if you really want to learn how to do it — this website is having a “compost challenge” and talking about how it really should be done. I’ve been learning a lot!
Oohh, thanks for the link! Definitely good stuff to know…maybe this will light my composting fire and get me started!

That’s awesome that you can just go get it for free! Maybe I need to move to Alaska..the base in Anchorage is on our list
My flowers died while I was in Ohio, and never replanted new ones, sadly…yours look great though!
ahh thanks. So Turkey is still up in the air? I love Alaska .. maybe you can move there, then I can move there, then we can meet up! hahaha
No!! Haha I had a straight up blonde moment and forgot you live in Colorado, not Alaska…don’t mind me
LOL Turkey isn’t up in the air—but we could go to Alaska next.

Thank you! I love that our town does this! I have 2 sunflower, one on each side of our porch. They are so pretty!
Aw that little doxie was adorable! If I could actually grow anything I would check, but I am not someone with a green thumb at all

hahaha! The dog was so cute, and as I walked away, he just kept following me! Poor little guy
Wish our town did this. Better not tell me where you live or I would have to fly over there and pick up that pup. Irresistible! Must have been pretty hard to walk away from him. Love your sunflower too. Mine are no way near to blooming.

I know, it was hard! He was so cute! I would bring him home if I thought I could handle a new dog and a Sammy!
Composting is one of those things that is so easy and cost efficient. I would love to find away to compost more efficiently in my apartment building!
Yeah, that’s a tough one. I don’t know if you have a little balcony that you could put a trashcan or something in where you could let it do it’s thing? My husband is trying to make a little tumbler for us with a 55 gallon drum, and putting it on some sort of pole or something.
We will have to see how that turns out!
Free? Wowzers. What a deal. Love the photo of you and hubby! So cute. That doggie is adorable. I like doxies.

Very cool! That’s great of the city to do something like that. Great use of tax money!!!! My friend is a “mucker” for a horse stable in Santa Fe and is in charge of getting rid of the horse manure. It’s amazing how many people are willing to come to the stables and shower “sh..”!
Sure produces a great garden! Your flowers are beautiful!
