Homemade Cream of Buckwheat Cereal

Warm and creamy cereal for breakfast… is there anything more comforting on a chilly morning?  I have been making this cereal recently, and it is so quick and easy!  I still eat oatmeal occasionally, but it is nice to have an alternative!

I even took this a step further and made this pumpkin cereal, by just adding some pumpkin puree and spices!

Print this recipe!

1 1/2 cups ground buckwheat – ground from groats

3 cups water

1 tbsp yogurt (or kefir, lemon juice, vinegar)

1/2 cup pumpkin puree (optional)

pumpkin spices – cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, etc

dash of salt

Toppings!

The night before, combine the ground buckwheat with the water and yogurt.  Stir well.  Cover with a towel and let sit overnight.

In the morning, dump into a medium pot and cook over medium low heat, stirring constantly.  Add the pumpkin and spices.  Stir well, or it will stick to the bottom of the pan.  It only takes about 5 minutes to cook.

Serve with your choice of toppings!

You could do this with any sort of grain – whole wheat flour, spelt, rye.. the choices are endless!  I just love buckwheat, and love keeping it gluten and grain free!

This was my husbands bowl …  some butter, milk, raisins, pumpkin seeds, and shredded coconut.  Yum!

You may want to add some sort of sweetness … I added a little bit of honey (my favorite!)  You could also had a chopped banana for natural sweetness!

This makes enough for several days worth of breakfasts for me.  Enough to almost see me through my work week!

  1. I have never actually heard of this, it looks very tasty for a cold morning. I am so excited about all the pumpkin flavored stuff out this time a year, but this is definitely a more healthy alternative than most of what I see out there.

  2. Perhaps you haven’t tried buckwheat; maybe you’ve eaten it a time or two in pancake-form. If you are not already a fan of this under-appreciated grain, I think this recipe is well enough to make you one!

    • I buy the raw groats, and yes, I grind them up. I just use a coffee grinder, but you could use buckwheat flour if you want, or use a blender to grind it up. I hope that helps!

  9. It looks delicious. My daughter is allergic to buckwheat so I can’t buy it or buy anything that has buckwheat in it. So many products now have buckwheat in them.

    • Wow really? I check the ingredients in everything I buy, but I really hadn’t seen buckwheat in a lot of foods, maybe more processed foods? I guess I think of buckwheat more as a rarely used ingredient!

  10. Hi Jane, this cereal is very interesting to me, as I haven’t heard of some of the ingredients! I do laugh about what a small town I live in and can’t get many things though. I did stop by to say hello and introduce myself. I am so happy that you have participated in Veronica’s fundraiser for myself. I am very humbled by everyone’s kindness. I look forward to talking to you in the future and reading your blog. God Bless!

    • Thank you so much! Veronica told me about your troubles, so I wanted to help! I love buckwheat because it is gluten free and grain free, to me it acts more like a normal flour :) I hope you feel better!!
