How I wash my hair – part 2

See part 1 here.

Last time I wrote about washing my hair, I talked about the no-poo method – washing without soap, and using baking soda and a vinegar rinse.  I could not get over the 2 weeks or so that it takes for your hair to adjust to that method, so I ended up giving it up.

I tried to go back to normal shampoo and conditioner, but I just couldn’t make myself do it.  Looking at all the ingredients on the shampoo bottles just made me cringe!  And I just can’t make myself fork out a load of money on shampoo that I’m not too sure about the ingredients.

A couple weeks before I left for India, I came across the company Bubble and Bee.  I actually was on a search for an all natural deodorant that did not have baking soda in it …  that is a whole different story!  I break out every time I use a baking soda based deodorant (and I have tried many different kinds!).  On my Facebook page, someone had mentioned Bubble and Bee, so I decided to check it out.

I mean, they have a bee in their name, it can’t be bad, right?

looook its a bee!

This is the deodorant I got, and I love it!  The ingredients are:  arrowroot powder, coconut oil, lime essential oil, and geranium essential oil.   You only use a very little at a time, and so it really lasts a long time.  I haven’t had any problems with it, and I really do love the smell!

Anyways, while I was looking at their site, I saw their lemon shampoo, and decided to give it a try.

organic natural shampoo

First of all, I must say, I love the scent!  It smells so fresh and clean.

Just like the no-poo method, this is not a detergent – it is a soap.  It takes a few days up to a few weeks for the chemical products in other shampoos to wash out of your hair.  This time – I decided to give it the full 2 weeks and just see what would happen!  The 2 weeks were up juuuust before I got on my flight overseas.  They also send a bottle for you to use a vinegar rinse after to shampoo your hair.  You fill the bottle 1/3 way full of vinegar, and the other 2/3 of the way full with water, and pour over your hair while in the shower.

I actually found using that bottle for the vinegar rinse didn’t work for me, so I invented my own method!

vinegar rinse

I have this spray bottle that I fill about 1/4 full with apple cider vinegar, and the rest of the way with water that I keep in my bathroom for cleaning my face – I just spray a cotton ball, and use that as a toner to help with blemishes.  So my process is – I wash my hair with this shampoo in the shower, and rinse it off immediately.  Then, I use this vinegar/water spray and spray down my hair right before I get out of the shower, and rinse it off.  I use about 3-4 sprays – just enough that if I run my fingers through my hair, it is smooth.  I have heard other people say that they don’t rinse the vinegar spray off, they let it evaporate as their hair dries – but that didn’t work for me!  I found my hair smelled slightly of vinegar.  I would much rather have it smell of lemony goodness!

I have been using this now for about 3 1/2 months, and I really do love it.  I am just finishing my first bottle of shampoo – so while this shampoo is more expensive than I would normally pay, I feel it is worth it.  I know I am not putting any chemicals into my body, and I love how my hair feels.

Now, I just need to get a hair cut, because my hair is getting sooo long!

The Healthy Beehive - meee!

Maybe someday I will try making my own shampoo, but for now I am loving this lemon shampoo!

I purchased these items with my own money, and all opinions on these products are my own.

  5. Nice Jane, it is so hard to find truly natural beauty products. And frustrating when you are allergic or sensitive to the ingredients in the ones that you do find, or they don’t work as well as you like. Right now I am using Everyday Shea shampoo and I’m happy with it. It is by Alaffia, made locally (for me) in Washington, founded by a native of Togo who developed a fair trade/co-op to market shea butter from his home country. I like that my food co-op sells it in bulk so I can take the bottle back to the store and refill it.
