Ever since I got home from India, I have been wanting to make some Indian spiced food. I even bought a cookbook to help me get started!
However, I just haven’t been able to pick one thing I want to make. Everything sounds so good! My husband and I were eating breakfast, and I was telling him about this. He googled something, and came up with this recipe for tandoori salmon. I thought it sounded good, and also we had some salmon already defrosting in the fridge!!! So Tandoori Salmon it is!
A tandoor is a round, cylindrical clay oven that is heated by charcoal or fire. The fire burns within the tandoor, which places the food really close to the fire. Thus, it would make sense to cook this on the grill. However, I chose to cook my salmon in the oven. If you would prefer to grill it, that would definitely work!
Indian Spiced Salmon
Print this recipe!
2 pounds salmon filet, or 4 – 6oz portions
1/2 cup yogurt
1/2 lemon, juiced
3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp turmeric
salt/pepper
In a smallish bowl, mix together the yogurt and all the spices.
Place the salmon on a shallow dish. (I used a sheet pan). Spoon the yogurt mixture over the salmon, massaging onto both sides. Cover, and place dish in the refrigerator.
Note: I bought a 2 pound huge salmon filet from Costco. You can also use separate smaller salmon filets.
Let salmon marinade 4 – 24 hours. I let mine hang out in the fridge overnight, and the flavors really soaked into the salmon!
When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 400 degrees, or preheat your grill. Place the salmon on a (greased) broiling pan. Cook for 20-30 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily.
Alternatively, you can grill the salmon!
Serve with rice, potatoes, or steamed vegetables!
I really loved the flavor of this dish. It wasn’t too spicy, and the turmeric really made it a fun color! If you wanted it spicier, you can add some hot peppers, or additional spices!

I am definitely pinning this one, I have some salmon in the freezer and couldn’t think of what to do with it.

I do have lots of recipes that I want to share! I’m working my way through my new cookbook
One of the great things about the food in India is that it was pretty fresh, and not all the processed food you find here in the US!
I love Indian and salmon.. I’m so having this tomorrow night. I love it!

This looks delicious! Bobby would probably want to grill but I’m sure the flavors would be just as delicious as baked! Thanks for sharing your India experience with food!

Hi Jane! I’m glad that India is inspiring you! After I got back from India I got back into making my own yogurt for a couple of years. While I was in India, I loved so much having freshly made yogurt right in the clay container it was set in for my breakfast. And given all the other things I was eating, yogurt for breakfast was a good idea. My favorite Indian cookbooks are the ones by Madhur Jaffrey.

Thanks Mary! I am planning to make some more Indian dishes, I just need to get to it! I did love all the fresh yogurt too. So many things had yogurt in them, and fresh paneer! I loved that!
